Oficial Audubon Conteo Navideño de Aves no. 1 en Volcán Atitlán 2007

El círculo del Conteo Navideño de Aves en Volcán Atitlán incluye los volcanes Atitlán y Tolimán, y la parte sur del Lago Atitlán, y cubre un rango altitudinal de 500 a 3500 m. Los hábitats son diversos e incluyen bosque latifoliado húmedo y semihúmedo, bosque mixto, matorral, sabana, café de sombra y otras áreas agrícolas, campos de lava, lagos y ríos, y zona urbana.
Un total de 35 observadores participaron en el Primer Conteo Navideño de Aves en Volcán Atitlán el 14 de diciembre 2007. Varios grupos contaron aves en Reserva Natural Privada Los Tarrales, Reserva Natural Privada Los Andes, Reserva Natural Privada Pachuj, Fincas Santo Tomás Perdido y Santa Teresa, Finca San Jerónimo Miramar, y en la bahía de Santiago Atitlán.
Observaciones notables
Un total de 3,518 aves de 216 especies se encontraron durante el Primer Conteo Navideño de Aves del Volcán Atitlán el 14 de diciembre 2007. Un total de 13 especies más fueron reportadas durante la Semana de Conteo.
Aunque ninguna de las aves reportadas fue inusual para esta área, varias especies endémicas regionales fueron reportadas por primera vez en un Conteo Navideño de Aves de Audubon, como Oreophasis derbianus (Pavo de Cacho), Penelopina nigra, Ortalis leucogastra, Strix fulvescens, Aspatha gularis, Campylopterus rufus, Lampornis viridipallens, Doricha enicura, Atthis ellioti, Notiochelidon pileata, Turdus rufitorques, Cyanocorax melanocyaneus, Cyanolyca pumilo, Tangara cabanisi y Icterus maculialatus.
Micrastur ruficollis y Florisuga mellivora ocurren en Guatemala principalmente en la vertiente del Atlántico. Ambas especies han sido reportadas varias veces en los alrededores del Volcán Atitlán (Eisermann & Avendaño 2007, K. Eisermann & C. Avendaño en Jones & Komar 2007, J. de León Lux en Jones & Komar 2008), y también fueron reportadas durante el Conteo Navideño. Es notable el conteo total 82 Cyanerpes cyaneus. Esta especie invierna en el área y durante estos meses es abundante en las copas de las plantaciones de café de sombra y de bosques. La especie más abundante fue Fulica americana, de la cual se contó un total de 1,189 individuos en la bahía de Santiago en el lago Atitlán.
